The process of collecting the Urushi (sap) and applying many layers of lacquer to this fountain pen takes three months to complete. The craftsman sows Urushi powder onto the body, which creates a grainy surface. After it has settled, he varnishes the body with lacquer several times to make the body harden. He sharpens these grains with charcoal and finishes with a silver lacquer. It is truly an artistic craftsmanship to decorate a fountain pen with a stone-like finish - "Ishi" translates as "a stone" in Japanese.

As with all hand-painted Tame-nuri pens, the colors will vary slightly from pen to pen - no two will ever be exactly the same.The Portable Cigar in Ishime-Kanshitsu Midori can be filled with bottled fountain pen ink using the provided converter. Nakaya pens can also use Platinum brand ink cartridges. Hand-painted Maki-e converters are also available.
