Long Fountain Pen
Kuro-tamenuri (Black-Red)
If simplicity is the highest form of elegance, this is it. As unadorned as this pen is, it achieves greatness by virtue of its materials, surface and color. Shown here is the Long Cigar (No Clip) fountain pen in Kuro-tamenuri (Black-Red).
Shown here below is the Long Writer (With Clip) fountain pen in Kuro-tamenuri (Black-Red).
The Urushi tradition is historic and profound in Japan, where lacquer ware has adorned utilitarian objects for centuries. This technique, though painstaking, gives this fountain pens its deep lustrous sheen and subtle color shift.

This is not a pen that you would carry in your pocket. Besides being clipless, at six and a half inches long, it would extend above the lip of most pockets. This pen is 6 1/2" capped. It weighs 24.5 grams.

This Nakaya fountain pen is made of Urushi, a material made from the sap of a Japanese lacquer tree. The process of collecting the Urushi (sap) and applying many layers of lacquer to this fountain pen takes three months to complete.

These close-ups give a sense of the subtle color shift that occurs on a new pen. As the pen ages with careful handling, more of red under color emerges. The Kuro-tamenuri shows the most dramatic color shift of any of the colors as the contrast between the black outer color is slowly worn away revealing the deep red under lacquer.

We can provide a Platinum (brand, not material) converter used to fill this pen with ink in either the simple form (no additional cost) or the painted "goldfish" design for an additional $21.

The Nakaya nib, imprinted Nakata, the family name of the manufacturer is made of solid 14K gold.

Each of these nibs is suitable for our customization to extra flexible (additional $65). The medium and broad tip can be customized by us into cursive italic, stub or oblique points (additional $55).

See below for the basic tip sizes of the Nakaya nibs as reported off of their web site: http://www.nakaya.org/eproduct3.html#urushi
