Long Writer Fountain Pen
Many Treasure Design

The Many Treasures] pen is a wonderful example of how Eastern and Western art influenced each other. It relates to the Japanese tradition of finding many treasures in the world of things, and in creating a beautiful object, alludes to the many in the one. But in this case, the execution is carried off in an abstract way that invokes the constructivist period in the early twentieth century which laid the foundation for so much modern art.

Seen here is the black Urushi base with designed elements using geometric shapes creating movement with color. The Many Treasure Design pictured above has a matte gold clip.

The art of Urushi (Lacquerware) originated in the Jomon period (ca. 12,000 B.C. - ca. 400 B.C.) and is recognized worldwide as a distinctively Japanese traditional craft. Urushi has attracted worldwide attention in recent times. "Wajima-nuri" is the most famous lacquer ware producing city in Japan. The Nakaya original Wajima nuri fountain pen is carefully coated with several layers of urushi lacquer differing in colors.
Black Urushi lacquerware "Roiro" finish, a special polishing method to create a mirror-like surface. All of the Nakaya Wajima products undergo a special finishing process known as "Roiro-shiage". This process is reserved for the highest class of Wajima products and results in an exceptionally shiny finish.

Constructivism was an artistic and architectural movement in Russia from 1919 onward which rejected the idea of "art for art's sake" in favor of art as a practice directed towards social purposes. This populist movement spread west and many artists, including Picasso were heavily influenced by the Russian constructivists. As with abstract art some might say you either get
it or you don't get it. But we definitely "get" this gorgeous pen!

Notice the matt surface clip on the cap.
