This Nakaya fountain pen is made of hard rubber and coated with Urushi, a material made from the sap of a Japanese lacquer tree. The process of collecting the Urushi (sap) and applying many layers of lacquer to this fountain pen takes three months to complete.
The extra long gripping section is particularly comfortable in the fingers. The long sized pen balances beautifully without posting the cap. We recommend the pen pillow to keep this pen in its place on your desk.
These hard rubber pens are cut on a foot treadle hand lathe by a very senior craftsman in the Nakaya Tokyo plant. He uses hand tools to cut the basic shapes of the pens as well as to finish the connecting screws between the cap and the barrel.
The surface finish exhibits a level of craftsmanship and attention that we have only seen in the finest pens.
Nakaya nibs run a little finer than most Japanese nibs, like Sailor or Pilot-Namiki, and one whole size finer than most European nibs. The Nakaya nib, imprinted Nakata, the family name of the manufacturer is made of solid 14K gold. Each of these nibs is suitable for our customization to an extra flexible style. The medium, broad and double-broad tip can be customized into cursive italic, stub or oblique points.
