The results seen here reflect the time honored tradition of urushi application, where a glow is created from within of a lighter color showing through the darker outer color. As these pens age with much time in the hand, the glow increases. The inner color becomes more dominant.
Urushi is obtained as sap from the urushi tree 'RhusVerniciflua' which originally comes from the Himalayas. The urushi tree is to be found mostly in Southeast Asia, particularly in countries such as Japan and it prefers a warm climate. Most of the sap comes from the male tree. (The female tree produces seeds for food and fuel.)

2009 sees the first of the new barrel and cap design of the Nakaya Neo Standard. The long taper and domed ends give this pen the handle shape of some paint brushes we have known.
In Japanese culture an old object gains respect and value by virtue of its service and careful wear. These are just this sort of object. With proper care, they will last generations and become all the more appreciated as a result of their use.

The darker color "breaks" along the edges and at the ends.

Finally, we have a terrific translation of the "mono magazine" article, published in Tokyo in the spring of 2008. This article was photographed and composed at the time of John Mottishaw's visit to Nakaya Pen's facilities.
