Portable Fountain Pen
Shu (Polished Red)
If simplicity is the highest form of elegance, this is it. Nakaya pens achieve greatness by virtue of its streamlined design, excellent materials, flawless surface and saturated colors. Shown here is the Portable size Writer (With Clip) fountain pen in Shu (Polished Red).
This Nakaya fountain pen is made of hard rubber or ebonite that is meticulously coated with Urushi, a material made from the sap of a Japanese lacquer tree. The process of collecting the Urushi and applying many layers of lacquer to this fountain pen takes three months to complete.
The Urushi process required as much as several months to complete. These finishes reveal a level of craftsmanship and attention that we have only seen in the finest quality surfaces.
We saw the hard rubber pens being cut in the Nakaya Tokyo plant. They were cut on a foot treaddle hand lathe by a very senior craftsman. He used hand tools to cut and finish these connecting screws between the cap and the barrel.

Below are the basic tip sizes of Nakaya nibs, as reported off of their web site. Nakaya nibs run a little finer than most Japanese nibs, like Sailor or Pilot-Namiki. The Nakaya nib, imprinted Nakata, the family name of the manufacturer is made of solid 14K gold. Each of these nibs is suitable for our customization to extra flexible (an additional $65 charge). The medium and broad tip can be customized into cursive italic, stub or oblique points (an additional $55 for these customizations).
This is the Nakaya Portable Shu pen here shown without the clip (Cigar). Because these pens are all hand painted and are original works of art the color may slightly vary.
