Namiki Falcon

Available in Black only, this pen comes with a naturally semi-flexible nib, and Pilot makes one of the best fine points on the market.  This combination makes the Falcon a fluid writer for those who like some "feel" to a fine point.  They list their point options as, "soft fine", "soft medium" and "soft broad". We know of no contemporary pen with a more flexible nib but it doesn't compare with the nibs in some vintage pens. The size of this pen would be considered standard, at 5 3/8" long, capped. It is just slightly shorter than a Pelikan M800, and slightly longer than an M600. The diameter of the grip is comfortable for almost all hands.

Retail price: $170.00 Our price: $136.00

With modifications to increase flexibility even further ($65) $201, OR to make into an oblique, stub or cursive italic tip ($55) $191.00. With both modifications, $236.00. For customization to true extra fine with added flex (Spencerian approximation)($110), the total is $241.00

This may be the best of East meets West. By adding greater flexibility to this already springy and well tempered nib and by cutting the tip to a rounded oblique shape, as the one at left has been, this pen can be made to perform two kinds of line width variation: modest pressure on the tines makes a bolder line than when a light touch is used and a thick/thin effect comes from the tip itself. When modified to make it even more flexible, this pen writes much like some European pens of the 1930s.  It is thanks, in part, to the calligraphy brush-like feel of the soft point.

This modification is challenging and requires patience and practice. If you are in doubt as to whether any customization would be right for you, please read through our FAQ pages.

We received a letter from a customer to whom we had sent a Falcon with the flex oblique modifications described above. Here are a few words:

When modified for maximum added flex and a true extra fine point, this pen is capable of the closest approximation to Spencerian/copperplate writing as we can create. We received a letter from a customer, Kirk Edelman, for whom we created such a point:

All of the Pilot/Namiki pens come with a converter and a cartridge.  This is the only cartridge/converter system, other than Sailor, that offers adequate ink flow for broader or faster writing.  I find Parker's, Waterman's, Montblanc's and most other pen companies that use removable ink vessels, just not up to the job. The end diameter on the Pilot, where it fits into the back of the section is more than twice that of the competitors.   (When I tested the converter, it held 29 drops of ink, considerably more than most other brands.)

"Hi Pat, Rec'd the Namiki Falcon today (Ed: Medium customized to Stub). "Magnificent, superb, elegant smooth writer, precision linestyle". My compliments to all of you guys. Once again, you bring that gleam to my eyes, a gleam of joy, pleasure, etc...
Warmest regards to ALL of you,
Andy Morales" (9/21/06)

This was an email referring to a Medium-nibbed Falcon we customized to a fine cursive italic: "My pen arrived safe and sound yesterday and I used it all day at work today. It's ... SUPERB! A little finer and sharper than my Pelikan it is very reminiscent of a mint 1950s Swan Calligraph - though with better capacity and ink flow... An excellent pen plus your fine workmanship. I am very pleased indeed, thanks very much. I shall save up and have another! Best wishes, Dave Shepherd" (3/17/04)

Here's a handwritten letter we received concerning a Falcon Fine we customized for extra flexibility: "Dear John, Just a quick note to let you know how happy I am with the Namiki Falcon that you customized (extra flex) for me. I've been using it every day, and it always writes smoothly - a real pleasure to use. Your staff, Pat & Josh both, were just great in helping me know what I wanted and get the order processed. Thanks a million for this lovely thing. Sincerely, Sonia Simone" (3/8/04)

Here's an email regarding a similar flex left oblique modification to a Falcon, Broad: "Pat and John: I can tell, by your incredibly helpful regard for my needs, that you don't take for granted gushing praise from your customers. My pen arrived yesterday.... It is superb....My next quest is for the perfect paper or, at least, paper that won't ruin this nib... any suggestions? Thanks again, Linda Kopelman" (2/6/04) (Unfortunately, we had no paper suggestions. Can anyone else help?)

"Dear John and Pat,
