Although
only seen on the signature calligraphy and the gold "stars" of the Nightline,
the traditional Japanese art of lacquering is a technique in which patterns are
first drawn on a surface with sap from a Japanese lacquer tree. Then powered
gold, silver and colored pigments are applied to the artwork while the urushi
(sap) is still moist.
  Because these
pieces are handmade, each is unique. The color and intensity of the abalone pieces
and the placement of the gold flecks vary from pen to pen, sometimes substantially.
