Yukari Flower Fence

Introduced in the Spring of 2005, this is Namiki's newest design in the Yukari Collection. Being a Yukari, it is not one of the largest of the Maki-e pens, but is still a standard size at 5 9/16" long, capped.

Consider the height of summer and an early morning walk along a garden path. It takes you past the flower fence, which is bursting with bloom. Here the Namiki artist suggests an intimate experience. The gold flecks impart the iridescence of a morning mist muting the flowers to subtle brilliance.

The design incorporates two different Maki-e techniques, Togidashi-maki-e (burnished Maki-e) and Hira-maki-e (flat Maki-e). Togidashi-maki-e is a method in which gilded patterns are dried, recoated with urushi, and finally burnished to a high sheen using charcoal. This style of Maki-e dates to the 7th century. The Hira-maki-e method uses colored urushi lacquers combined with raw lacquer which is then coated with a sprinkling of gold powder.

Requiring four months to finish, this pen was produced at the Hiratsuka Japan Maki-e workshop.

The design combines the rhythmic motif of the fence with the soft organic movement of the branches. Fine gold lines keep the eye moving while the mass of dark green leaves and light colored blooms settle the senses.

The 18k nib is available in fine, medium and broad and is to our thinking of the highest quality made in the world.

The traditional Mt. Fuji logo engraved above the imprint has white metal plating making this a lovely two-tone nib.

As always, the artists signature is an integral part of the design and finished product.

We don't currently have this design in stock but could hopefully get one from our distributor within a week. This is the most modestly priced of the Maki-e pens. Retail: $1500.00 Our price: $1200.00
