This pen combines the best qualities
of hand painting and the process of inlaying abalone. Although we have tried to
capture this beauty with our pictures, holding this pen in hand is the best way
to see it. The abalone shimmers behind the hibiscus and the hummingbird, changing
color depending on the angle that it is seen from and the way light falls on it.
Red of the flower, gold of the "atmosphere" and the intense colors of
the abalone are combined in this pen to make us think of the the iridescence of
the hummingbird. The same size as others in the Yukari collection at 5 5/8",
capped, this pen is similar to a Pelikan M800.
Mount
Fuji is overlaid on this 18K nib. The Namiki pentagon logo shows on both the nib
and the clip in this scan. Available in Fine Medium and Broad, we find these nibs
to be among the best made in the world and, of course, exceptionally smooth.
The filling system is a pump converter, also accepting
standard Namiki cartridges. This converter is the finest anywhere to be found,
taking more ink than any others and doing it very well. Although we are not a
big fan of converters, we think Namiki got the engineering right!
Think about wings that move so fast that they cannot
be seen.
Notice the controlled use of gold dust in the laquer surface on the left. This
is used to great effect, giving the sense of fast movement.
Each
pen had two hummingbirds, one above, on the barrel, and the other reaching down,
on the cap, into the hibiscus flowers.
The hibiscus flower with stamen and the beak of the hummingbird
shows a depth of color that can only be achieved with gold dust and pigments on
laquer.
The artist, as always, signs his work, in red, below the title
in gold.
