Namiki Yukari Wave and Plover
This is one of the most traditional motif Yukari pens we have seen in a long time. The views are distant, the composition is subtle and the subject is serene. Atmospheric perspective provides distance between the birds and the waves. The pine tree grows out of the traditional rock of Japan. The sequence of three birds on the cap (see the cap detail below) gives the impression of motion.
The Wave and Plover design incorporates two different Maki-e techniques, Togidashi-maki-e (burnished Maki-e) and Hira-maki-e (flat Maki-e). Togidashi-maki-e is a method in which gilded patterns are dried, recoated with urushi, and finally burnished to a high sheen using charcoal. This style of Maki-e dates to the 7th century. The Hira-maki-e method uses colored urushi lacquers combined with raw lacquer which is then coated with a sprinkling of gold and silver powders.

Note the use of both silver and gold, sprinkled next to the artist's signature above. The signature in red is below the Japanese characters describing this pen.

Available in Fine or Medium 18k two-tone nib, these pens are superb writers, usually a little finer than European points of the same name. This pen comes with Namiki's highest quality converter, in fact this is the best converter filling system we have seen anywhere. It also comes with a single ink cartridge. We suggest, if you use cartridges, that you get more.

A nicely designed soft-wood inner presentation box surrounds this pen.
