| At all the major sanctuaries of ancient greece, the greeks included athletic contests among their ways of honoring the gods. The oldest and most important of these games were those held at the sanctuary of Olympia. After 776 BC, the year in which the first Olympics were held, their fame spread rapidly through East and West. |
| It was at Olympia that the ideal of fair competition was founded, and became the basis for the eductaion of young people. It was believed that the spirit should be cultivated in parallel with the maximum possible development of the body, and victors in the Olympic Games were expected to be outstanding in both respects. The only prize awarded to the victors at Olympia was a wreath made of olive branches, which the champions usually dedicated to the gods. |
| The body of the pen is in the color in which vases showing the athletes were painted. The bandage, in gilded sterling silver, bears an an engraved depiction of the one-stadium race, the "stadion", which was the only event down to the XIII Olympiad and remained the most prestigious, despite all the others added in later times. |
