Pilot Custom 823 Amber Demonstrator

Fountain Pen

We have been waiting for this pen to arrive on our shores. I saw it in Tokyo more than a year ago and have been wanting to have it here ever since. Finally, Pilot delivers the much awaited vacuum-filled-from-the-bottle fountain pen. This is a full size model in an semi-transparent amber colored resin.
Having tested and shipped the first batch of these pens, I can give an unqualified thumbs up. The speed that is fills in only exceeded by the volume of ink that it holds, an amazing 22ml.
Don't expect to have ink fill the entire barrel as a partial vacuum gets about 3/4 of the semi-transparent barrel topped up. Nevertheless, its ink capacity is right up there with the Pelikan M1000 and far exceeds all of the cartridge/converter systems.
The pump, show above at half stroke creates a vacuum on the down-stroke which ends when the piston passes a widening of the barrel near the section. The ink is then drawn up into that vacuum. This is a well executed and ingenuous system. They call it a "Type P" fountain pen for "pump" filling. It relies on the same principle used by, among others, Sheaffer's pens during the 1930's.
The instruction tag on the back of the cap lets you know that in order to write, you must unscrew the blind cap at the end of the barrel about 2mm. (under 1/8 inch). The good news is when screwed down, the plunger gets in the way of ink entering the section, closing off the ink flow when not in use.

The Custom 823 is available with a solid 14K firm fine, medium, or broad nib. These tip sizes are typical of the Japanese widths, almost a full size finer than the European equivalent sizes.

If you would like, we can customize this nib to an extra-fine point or turn the medium into a very fine stub, italic or oblique tip. Also, because it is 14K gold and springy, we can make this nib more flexible. This customization is for those with a careful hand.

A handsome presentation box includes a bottle of ink making it a classy gift for special occasions. A full set of papers, instructions and owners certificate accompany this fountain pen. This is a full size pen for the serious writer. And a great value!
Now for a limited time we have a Clear Custom 823. Only a very small number of these pens are available out side of the Japanese market. To see more images and details click here.
