Platinum Maki-e Galaxy

Abalone pieces, otherwise known as Raden, have been used in the making of fountain pens since Sheaffer introduced the practice in 1935. Many companies had been using ground up fish scales mixed with nitrocellulose plastic before that time to give an iridescent effect to the surface of their pens. Now Platinum has taken this one step farther to light up the surface of this pen with bits of similar sized abalone with the Platinum Maki-e Galaxy.

The raden reflects light in different colors depending on the angle from which it is viewed, making a constantly changing sparkle.

A craftsman has sprinkled "ao-gai" (blue sea shells) over the body of the pen to represent the stars of the night sky. This is a favorite motif in traditional Kaga Maki-e.

The Galaxy Maki-e is a cartridge-converter pen that comes complete with a softwood presentation box. Converter and a starter cartridge are also included. The clutch (pull-off and push-on) cap is a great choice for on-the-go writers and was also used by the landmark Parker 51 fountain pens from the 1940s and 50s.

Notice how the artist's signature almost seems to float above the reflective surface below it.

The Galaxy comes complete with any of Platinum's complete line of standard 3776-series solid gold nibs.
