1911 Small Colors |
|
This fountain pen is based on the 1911 design, but a little
smaller all the way around. It measures 5 1/4" capped and has a barrel diameter
of .487". It weighs in at 19.6 grams compared to the 23.7 grams of the standard
1911. Sailor has kept the band arrangements, the black ends and exactly the same
clip. However, no anchor logo is present at the top of the cap. |
| |
| We think this pen has two qualities that make it
noteworthy. The first is the strong color of each, apparent on this page. The
second is the extremely high quality nib. |
| |
| The blue 1911 small is much more vibrant than the
blue in the 1911 full size, which reads as black in low light conditions. This
blue is deeper than the picture above and shifts to a warm blue under daylight. We have one pre-owned small 1911 in blue with a 14K Fine nib for $100. |
| |
| These are user pens, made for writers and mark
makers. |
| |
Whereas the blue color is inclined toward the
red, the red color is inclined toward the blue. Both colors appear more pastel
on my computer screen than they do as observed. This means that the red is a stronger
color than it seems above. |
| |
The trim quality is just as high as
it is on the full sized 1911. The bands fit smoothly and tightly and the parts
fit together flawlessly. When posted, the cap fits well down on the barrel, making
a nicely balanced writing instrument. |
|
|
Yellow is the jazziest of them all.
Reminiscent of the yellow of the 1928 Parker Duofold Mandarin, this pen may require
sun glasses. Once again, it is less pastel, and a more declarative yellow than
the picture above.
Notice
the excellent fit and finish of the cap and barrel trim on the imag to the left.
The sailor anchor logo is imprinted on the nib. |
| | The
1911 small colors comes with a 14K nib, instead of the 21K found on the original
1911 (full size) series. We
have seen 14K nibs that have been in service for more than 100 years, we know
that a 14K nib will last a lifetime, without corrosion. It is a stiff nib with
a little bit of spring making it a smooth writer. The 1911
Small Colors come the a range of 14k nibs:: EF, F, M, B, and Music. These are
no longer available with Zoom nibs.

| Transparent |
| |
|
| The transparent Colors shows the relationship
between the nib and the cap. When the pen is capped, it shows the way the clip
is attached and the bands are affixed. Of course, the downside of all demonstrator
pens is the presence of ink, when it gets to places that you might not want to
see it. This color is not for clean freaks. For other demonstrators, click here
to see the Omas Visions or the Pelikan
Demonstrators. For an entry level pen, comparable with the Pelikan M200
and the Namiki Vanishing point, the Sailor Colors series is a strong contender.
