Sailor King of Pen Maki-e Dragon

The Sailor Maki-e Dragon fountain pen is the first in what we expect will be a series of maki-e pens.

According to mythology the four sacred animals are: the Phoenix, the Unicorn, the Dragon Turtle and as shown here - the Dragon.

This one starts with a bang - roiling flames, clouds of hot breath, issues of steam and two writhing dragons, one on the cap and the second on the barrel. The dragon fountain pen is a study in opposites; the complementary colors, red and green, the two dragons opposing each other across lip of the cap. Also the textural difference between the smooth hard rubber surface and the many surfaces of the urushi have an interesting opposition.

When Sailor stripped the trim from the barrel and cap of the hard rubber King of Pen, there was much speculation about what use would be made of this "tabula raza" or should we say "tabula noir". Now we know.

At 6 1/16" long, with cap on, and 35.5 grams, this is a moderate weight pen for its size. The balance is excellent. It is exactly the same size as the KOP but weighs an additional 1.5 grams, presumably made up of urushi, gold dust, pigments and abalone.

The techniques employed here include the following.
Urushi: a sap from the lacquer tree which is used as a base for the application of powdered gold, silver and pigments into which these materials stick.

Raden: pieces of abalone are placed into this gummy material before it hardens, refracting light as no other natural material can do. Notice how the eyes of the dragon change color depending on the angle from which they are viewed.
Taka-maki-e method is a Maki-e applied on patterns in raised relief. It adds physical dimension to the surface of the pen and dates from the 12th century.

This artist Kousen Oshita is a fourth generation maki-e artist from the Oshita family. These hand painted pens are created in very small numbers. We have only been able to get one of them at present and do not know when we will be able to get more.

Even the artist's signature, to the left, is part of this dynamic composition.

Because they share the same nib as the King of Pen, we can provide this pen in a number of nib sizes, as well as some specialty nibs.

We currently have this pen with a medium nib. It is semi-flexible, largely because of its size, much in the same way that the Pelikan M1000 is semi-flexible.
