According to mythology the four sacred animals are:
the Phoenix, the Unicorn, the
Dragon Turtle and as shown here
- the Dragon.
This one starts with a bang - roiling flames, clouds of hot
breath, issues of steam and two writhing dragons, one on the cap and the second
on the barrel. The dragon fountain pen is a study in opposites; the complementary
colors, red and green, the two dragons opposing each other across lip of the cap.
Also the textural difference between the smooth hard rubber surface and the many
surfaces of the urushi have an interesting opposition.
When Sailor stripped
the trim from the barrel and cap of the hard rubber King of Pen, there was much
speculation about what use would be made of this "tabula raza" or should
we say "tabula noir". Now we know.
At 6 1/16" long, with
cap on, and 35.5 grams, this is a moderate weight pen for its size. The balance
is excellent. It is exactly the same size as the KOP but weighs an additional
1.5 grams, presumably made up of urushi, gold dust, pigments and abalone.
The
techniques employed here include the following.
Urushi: a sap from
the lacquer tree which is used as a base for the application of powdered gold,
silver and pigments into which these materials stick.
