King of Pen Maki-e Phoenix |
|
|
| |
According to mythology the four sacred
animals are: the Dragon, the Unicorn,
the Dragon Turtle and as shown here
- the Phoenix. At 6 1/16" long, closed, and a moderate (for its size) 35.5g,
this pen is only slightly heavier than the new King
of Pen. For admirers of maki-e artist Kosen Oshita's work, this Shi-Rei Series
of the "Celestial Guardians of the Universe" will not disappoint. |
 |
The phoenix, or "Hou-ou", is often used on good-luck totems. This
beautiful bird has positive associations with virtue and grace, peace and prosperity.
The red plume on the phoenix's head immediately draws the eye downward
on the pen. Here phoenix wings swoop up from the end of the barrel in a shimmer
of powdered gold and silver. Looking upward toward the flora rendered on the cap,
the phoenix is poised for flight. | |
| As with all other maki-e pens, an Urushi base is applied
to the pen in order for the powdered gold, silver and pigments to stick. Next,
pieces of abalone are are placed onto the Urushi base while still gummy. Notice
the way the purple center of the vine, to the left, reflects the light. Lastly,
in order to create dimension in the artwork, the Taka-maki-e method is
used. Maki-e is applied on specific
patterns in raised relief. |

As with all of Oshita's work, his signature graces the
barrel of the pen. So as not to distract from the artistry, the gold clip is modest
and unobtrusive. Because the Maki-e Phoenix shares the same nib as the King
of Pen, we can provide this pen in a number of nib sizes, as well as some specialty
nibs. This pen comes equipped with a medium nib.
