Sailor King of Pen Maki-e Turtle

According to mythology the four sacred animals are: the Dragon, the Phoenix, the Unicorn, and as shown here - the Dragon Turtle. At 6 1/16" long, closed, and a moderate (for its size) 35.5g, this pen is only slightly heavier than the new King of Pen. For admirers of maki-e artist Kosen Oshita's work, this Shi-Rei Series of the "Celestial Guardians of the Universe" will not disappoint.

The Dragon turtle, or "Ki-ryu", is said to be one of the Dragon's nine sons. As the Guardian of Wealth and Prosperity, it has positive associations in Feng Shui.

The most noticeable feature of the dragon head is the piercing blue abalone eyes which draw attention down to the middle of the barrel. With its head turned just so, the Dragon turtle gives us one last glance before making plunging into the ocean waves that adorn the cap.

As with all other maki-e pens, an Urushi base is applied to the pen in order for the powdered gold, silver and pigments to stick. Notice the way the gold dust flickers, like spray, on the silver waves of the cap. Next, pieces of abalone are are placed onto the Urushi base while still gummy.

Lastly, in order to create dimension in the artwork, the Taka-maki-e method is used. Maki-e is applied on specific patterns in raised relief.

As with all of Oshita's work, his signature graces the barrel of the pen. So as not to distract from the artistry, the gold clip is modest and unobtrusive.

This pen comes equipped with a medium nib.
