Lacquer Techniques on Sailor Pens
With Special Thanks to Chris Reed of Sailor Pens, Europe and
Karen McElwaney, Sailor USA (Several of the models
mentioned here are not yet available in the US. We will be seeing them as soon
as we can.) 'Seishou - Shitsugei' series
(The name of this series means, 'The 'lacquer art' of Teruyo Kato') The artist,
Teruyo Kato uses her own 'modified' traditional maki-e methods to create these
unique designs.
Moonlit Forest - 'Hayashi'
Maki-e techniques used include 'Ginji' - ground silver dust applied to the
Urushi lacquer surface and polished. 'Haribori' is a process in which
the Urushi lacquer surface is carefully 'scratched' using a special metal needle
to reveal the ground surface underneath. This model also has inlays of Raden
(mother of pearl) in the Urushi lacquer surface. Red and Green meteor
'Nagare Boshi' These models use techniques called 'Kanshitsu', a
dry lacquer art, whereby the urushi lacquer is thickened using hemp cloth and
clay dust and mixed with gold dust 'ginji' creating a raised effect. It is then
polished to reveal an interesting surface. Then a technique known as 'Zougan'
is used to inlay the silver beads and the Raden (mother of pearl or abalone).
Dragonfly 'Tombo' This model also uses the 'Kanshitsu'
dry lacquering techniques with 'Shunuri' Urushi lacquer and inlays of 'Raden'
using the 'Zougan' technique. Brown Forest 'Dan nuri' This model
uses the 'Kanshitsu', dry lacquering process, the same as above and combines 'Choubori'
this is carved lacquer. In this case the design is engraved on the surface of
the thickened Urushi lacquer surface. The 'Zougan' technique is then used to inlay
the Raden material. Gold 'Kin' This is made using the
'Kanshitsu' Urushi lacquering technique using the 'Ginji' ground gold foil or
dust creating the unique surface design.
