Sailor Wood Maki-e Grape

This Sailor Wood Maki-e has a summer theme that celebrates the grape vine. With a few simple lines, Sailor's artist has captured the lyrical feeling of grape tendrils.

Notice the use of the Taka-maki-e method which is a Maki-e applied on patterns in raised relief and dates to the 12th century. This can be seen in the raised veins on the surface of the grape leaves.
The Raden mother of pearl technique is used to depict the variety of color seen in the grape. These are inlaid pieces of abalone, embedded in the body of the pen to suggest the fruit in greens and purples. They change color depending on from where they are viewed.
The stippling on the leaf below depicts the textured underside, by use of heavier pieces of gold set in the urushi lacquer.
The 18K Sailor nib is smooth and of the highest quality. It is available from us in fine, medium and broad.

With a signature similar to that of the Plum and Mandarin Duck pens, this pen also appears to have been executed by the same artist. They were chosen as our favorites.
This is a higher level of maki-e than that seen on the resin 1911 pen.
This pen comes in a softwood presentation box lined with midnight blue velvet. The standard high quality Sailor converter and two cartridges are included. We have the complete line of Sailor cartridge ink for those on the go.
