The Eboya Kyouka Small Tanshin Red is made from hand-crafted ebonite hard rubber and is available with your choice of 14k solid gold Bock nib.

The pen ships in a simple presentation box and includes a converter and starter ink cartridge.

"Small" only in comparison to the larger Medium and Large models, the Eboya Kyouka Small in Tanshin Red is comfortably mid-sized when uncapped and becomes a generously full-sized pen when used in the posted position. This is both a superb everyday writing instrument as well as an exemplary showcase for the use of hand-turned raw ebonite. The rich dark hues of the marbled Tanshin surface combine with the yellow gold of the 14k solid gold nib to create a memorably distinctive appearance.

Eboya's parent company, Nikko Ebonite Ltd., supplies the natural ebonite hard rubber used by most of the major Japanese pen manufacturers. The pens Eboya creates under their own brand name have a unique design aesthetic, in many cases inspired either by traditional Japanese artisanal crafts or by classic American or European fountain pen designs of the early 20th century. Hand-crafted at each stage of production, each Eboya fountain pen requires six months or more to be produced.

Note as well the knurled patterning which adds to both the tactile and aesthetic charms of this pen.

Ebonite hard rubber is a classic material for quality fountain pens - vintage ebonite pens sold a hundred years ago and more are still in everyday usage. Eboya sustainably harvests ebonite from the Asian rubber gum tree. Caps and barrels are then hand-turned and polished. No outer layer of lacquer is used - these are raw ebonite pens, highly prized by users and collectors. While care should be taken to avoid overly long exposure to extreme temperatures or direct sunlight, Eboya considers the slight changes in color that may develop in time to be part of the natural seasoning process for this pen. "Wabi-Sabi" is the term used in Japanese culture to express the notion that objects gain in value with time and usage.

"Eboya - Made In Tokyo" is machine-engraved on the barrel of each pen.

Bock solid gold 14k nibs are well-suited to customizations including Stub, Cursive Italic, and Left Oblique, as well as the modification for added flex - see our nib customizations page for more information.

Unless requested otherwise, each pen or nib you purchase from us will be carefully examined, tested, and optimized for your personal writing characteristics before it ships. See our nib set-up and optimization page for more details.

Eboya pens are individually handcrafted in a process requiring a minimum of three to six months. Consult our Eboya Availability Chart, updated weekly, to see which pens we currently have in stock, or simply to browse by model, size, or color.
