With its earthy brown thread, rich amber-toned finish, and slender shape, the Nakaya Portable Cigar String-Rolled Shiro-tamenuri fountain pen combines streamlined simplicity with unique aesthetic details. The rare white Shiro base radiates like warm sunlight from beneath the mahogany-hued lacquer.
The brown string wrapped around the middle not only provides a visual and textural delight, but it also serves a functional purpose by strengthening the area around the cap and barrel edges. String wrapping has a long history as a decorative art in Japan - tsukamaki, for instance, is the art of sword handle wrapping.
This Nakaya fountain pen is made of hand-turned ebonite hard rubber
that is meticulously coated with Urushi, a material
made from the sap of a Japanese lacquer tree. The process of collecting
the Urushi and applying many layers of lacquer to this fountain
pen takes a minimum of three months or more to complete. For a variation on Shiro-tamenuri finish, take a look at the distressed Nakaya Naka-ai Cigar Negoro Shiro-tame Fountain Pen.
In this string-rolled model fine string is embedded in the urushi lacquer, then given coats of natural resin. The Shiro under-layer on the cap and barrel has a subtly undulated or mottled appearance, with varying areas of lighter or darker finish.
