The Nakaya Portable Writer Ama-iro String Rolled fountain pen is bound in a time-honored tradition.

The string wrapped around the middle not only provides a visual and textural delight, but it also serves a functional purpose by strengthening the area around the cap and barrel edges. String wrapping has a long history as a decorative art in Japan - tsukamaki, for instance, is the art of sword handle wrapping. Matching the string to the same color family as the Urushi finish makes this a streamlined, seamless effect.

As with all hand-painted pens, the colors will vary slightly from pen to pen - no two will ever be exactly the same. This particular pen incorporates a bit more turquoise, for example, while some other Ama-iro pens have a lighter pastel shade, such as this Piccolo Writer. See how the string wrap covers the bottom of the cap and top of the barrel, providing strength and texture.

This pen will be a comfortable fit for most users. The clip serves as a built-in roll stopper and also allows the pen to be kept securely in a shirt pocket.

Nakaya pens can be filled from bottled fountain pen ink using the provided converter and can also use Platinum brand top quality ink cartridges. Hand-painted Maki-e converters are also available.

Nakaya pens are individually handcrafted in a process that requires a minimum of three to six months and often much longer.

Though the entire range of Nakaya nibs is made available, the rhodium-plated version pictured here complements the cool colors of the Ama-iro finish.

Nakaya pens ship in a solid softwood shipping box decorated with Japanese Kanji script and lined with decorative rice paper. A fabric pen "kimono" and starter box of Platinum brand cartridges are also included, making this pen a lovely presentation item. Sensible and elegant packaging has long been a hallmark of the Nakaya brand.

Unless requested otherwise, each pen or nib you purchase from us will be carefully examined, tested, and optimized for your personal writing characteristics before it ships.
