Nakaya Dorsal Fin Version 2 Ishime-Kanshitsu Aka-tamenuri

One of the most distinctive pen models created by Nakaya, the Dorsal Fin Version 2 is created by applying multiple layers of urushi lacquer over a period of months to create the fin shape on the cap and barrel. The surface is then completed in either smooth urushi or stone texture Ishime-Kanshitsu finish.

The Nakaya Dorsal Fin Version 2 in Ishime Kanshitsu Aka-tamenuri finish is one of the most captivating examples of this pen style. The Dorsal Fin shape, combined with the textured Ishime finish and red Aka color, make this a pen that creates a bold visual statement.

Every step of the production process for this pen is artisanal. The cap and barrel are hand-turned from sustainably harvested natural ebonite, while the Urushi finish is itself derived from a natural sap which is processed to create a tough, durable lacquer. Dried urushi powder is used to create the stone texture finish on the surface of this pen.

When rotated to either side, the shape of the Dorsal Fin Version 2 Aka-tamenuri Ishime-Kanshitsu fountain pen can be seen clearly. Rather than lying flat, this unique cap billows into a fin shape. A second fin protrudes from the barrel of the pen, creating an innovative boomerang-like design.

The fins of this Ishime fountain pen evoke images of rolling hills, textured like the earth. Given Nakaya's philosophy of simple elegance and preference for organic materials, this association with the natural world seems highly appropriate.

Nakaya pens can be filled with bottled fountain pen ink using the provided converter. They can also use Platinum brand ink cartridges. Hand-painted Maki-e converters are also available, as are a wide range of other options and accessories.
The Nakaya Dorsal Fin Version 2 in Ishime Kanshitsu Aka-tamenuri finish is provided with solid gold 14k single-tone nib in your choice of tipping size.

The Nakaya double slit Music nib is available at an added premium, as are plated nibs in Pink Gold, Rhodium, Ruthenium, or Two-Tone.
14k nibs are well-suited to customizations including Stub, Cursive Italic, and Left Oblique, as well as the modification for added flex.

Decorative rice paper, a simple solid softwood shipping box decorated with Japanese Kanji script, and a fabric pen "kimono" are all included with this pen, making it a lovely presentation item. Sensible and elegant packaging has long been a hallmark of the Nakaya brand.

Nakaya pens are individually handcrafted in a process that requires a minimum of three to six months and often much longer.
