Nakaya is a company that strives for the unique, and perhaps the best example is their Dorsal Fin series of pens. Seen here is the version two, which includes fins on both the cap and barrel, in Ishime-Kanshitsu Heki-tamenuri stone finish.
The Dorsal Fin shape is achieved by applying multiple layers of urushi lacquer to the ebonite surface of the pen. The textured Ishime finish is then achieved by the use of dried Urushi lacquer as a powder. The results are both pleasing to the touch and eminently practical - the fins also serve as built-in roll-stoppers.
When rotated to either side, the shape of the Dorsal Fin Version 2 Heki-tamenuri Ishime-Kanshitsu fountain pen can be seen clearly. Rather than lying flat, this unique cap billows into a fin shape. A second fin protrudes from the barrel of the pen, creating an innovative boomerang-like design.

The fins of this Ishime fountain pen evoke images of rolling hills, textured and colored like the earth. Given Nakaya's philosophy of simple elegance and preference for organic materials, this association with the natural world seems highly appropriate.
Nakaya pens can be filled with bottled fountain pen ink using the provided converter and can also use Platinum brand cartridges. Hand-painted Maki-e converters are also available.
The Nakaya Dorsal Fin Version 2 in Ishime-Kanshitsu Heki-tamenuri finish is provided with solid gold 14k single-tone nib in your choice of tipping size.
14k nibs are well-suited to customizations including Stub, Cursive Italic, and Left Oblique, as well as the modification for added flex.
Decorative rice paper, a simple solid softwood shipping box decorated with Japanese Kanji script, and a fabric pen "kimono" are all included with this pen, making it a lovely presentation item.
