Nakaya Dorsal Fin Version 1 Ama-iro

The Nakaya Dorsal Fin Version 1 is one of the most innovative and distinctive designs created by Nakaya. Layers of Urushi lacquer are applied over a period of months to create the fin on the cap, and the surface is then completed with either smooth Urushi or stone texture Ishime-Kanshitsu finish. With either finish, this is one of the most memorable writing instruments Nakaya has produced.

The double slit Music nib is available at an added premium, as are plated nibs in Pink Gold, Rhodium, Ruthenium, or Two-Tone.

Just in time for those cloudless summer days, the Nakaya Dorsal Fin Version 1 fountain pen is finished in sky blue Urushi lacquer. The combination of playful blue with an expansive, angled shape sets this pen apart as a unique work of art and writing instrument. Multiple layers of urushi lacquer are applied over a period of months to create the raised cap fin - this is one of the most time-intensive procedures utilized by Nakaya.

As with all hand-made pens, colors will vary slightly from pen to pen - no two will ever be exactly alike.

Nakaya pens can be filled with bottled fountain pen ink using the provided converter, and can also use Platinum brand ink cartridges. Hand-painted Maki-e converters are also available.

14k nibs are well-suited to customizations including Stub, Cursive Italic, and Left Oblique, as well as the modification for added flex.

Though the full range of Nakaya nibs is made available, the rhodium-plated version matches the cool, sleek tones of the Ama-iro finish.

Decorative rice paper, a simple solid softwood shipping box decorated with Japanese Kanji script, and a fabric pen "kimono" are all included with this pen, making it a lovely presentation item. Sensible and elegant packaging has long been a hallmark of the Nakaya brand.

Nakaya pens are individually handcrafted in a process that requires a minimum of three to six months and often much longer.
Unless requested otherwise, each pen or nib you purchase from us will be carefully examined, tested, and optimized for your personal writing characteristics before it ships.
