Nakaya Dorsal Fin Version 2 Toki-iro

One of the most distinctive pen models created by Nakaya, the Dorsal Fin Version 2 is created by applying multiple layers of urushi lacquer over a period of months to create the fin shape on the cap and barrel. The surface is then completed in either smooth urushi or stone texture Ishime-Kanshitsu finish.

The double slit Music nib is available at an added premium, as are plated nibs in Pink Gold, Rhodium, Ruthenium, or Two-Tone.

With its unique rose-pink color and innovative double-fin shape, the Dorsal Fin Version 2 in Toki-iro takes you to new heights. Previously available only as an introductory limited edition which has sold out, we are now offering Toki-iro as one of the Nakaya premium colors we offer. The Dorsal Fin Version 2 utilizes multiple layers of urushi applied over a period of months in order to create the rasied fins on the cap and barrel.

When placed on its side, the Dorsal Fin Version 2 in Toki-iro resembles the keel of a boat. This finish differs from many of Nakaya's traditional darker repertoire of colors.

Beyond its distinctive appearance, the Dorsal Fin is also a terrific everyday writer. As with all Nakaya pens, the balance is superb. A smooth, rounded section allows for a comfortable writing experience beyond the architecture of the pen's exterior.

The Dorsal Fin Version 2 in Toki-iro is a unique rose-pink color. Though the entire range of Nakaya nibs is made available, pink gold plating on the nib matches the Urushi finish and creates a streamlined, monochromatic look. As with all hand-made pens, colors will vary slightly from pen to pen - no two will ever be exactly alike.
"Toki" refers to the Japanese Crested Ibis, a bird once abundant in Japan but now on the verge of extinction. Covered with a veil of pinkish-white feathers, this bird is a Japanese treasure. The muted pink here resembles some of the Toki's coloring.

These smooth-writing nibs are well-suited to customizations including Stub, Cursive Italic, and Left Oblique, as well as the modification for added flex.

Decorative rice paper, a simple solid softwood shipping box decorated with Japanese Kanji script, and a fabric pen "kimono" are all included with this pen, making it a lovely presentation item. Sensible and elegant packaging has long been a hallmark of the Nakaya brand.

Nakaya pens are individually handcrafted in a process that requires a minimum of three to six months and often much longer.
Unless requested otherwise, each pen or nib you purchase from us will be carefully examined, tested, and optimized for your personal writing characteristics before it ships.
