Platinum Izumo Urushi Yagumonuri

Izumo Province in Japan is well known for artisanal paper, and so has intimate ties with the practice of writing. Pictured below is Izumo Taisha, the Izumo Grand Shrine. For the first time in 60 years, the sacred Buddhist ritual of Dai-Sengu was performed in May 2013 to celebrate the shrine's restoration. To commemorate this event, Platinum has released a limited number of Izumo Yagumonuri fountain pens featuring the motif of a sea of clouds, the symbol of Izumo.

Yagumonuri is a time-consuming and meticulous technique where a pattern is hand-drawn using brightly-colored lacquer and then sprinkled with metal or colored powder. Urushi lacquer is then painted over the maki-e design.

The Izumo Yagumonuri fountain pen has a full form with soft, curved lines and a tapered shape. The long gripping section includes a threaded ring for a secure connection with the cap. It also offers a pleasant traction for the fingers and thumb when writing. This is a large, full-bodied pen - though big in the hand, it is not overly heavy. The pen uses Platinum's reliable cartridges, or can be filled with bottled ink with the included converter. Hand-painted Maki-e converters are also available.

The motif is a sea of clouds in the heavens, the symbol of Izumo. With its flecks of gold and addition of blues, oranges, and greens, this pen is meant to evoke images of the creation story of Japan. These Yagumo, or "thick clouds", are drawn on the ceiling of the Izumo Taisha shrine.

The Izumo Yagumonuri fountain pen comes standard with any of Platinum's full range of President series 18k two-tone nibs.

Packaged in a wooden box lined with green velvet and with a green fabric folding pen kimono, the pen comes complete with an ink converter, to fill from the bottle, as well as a starter ink cartridge. The presentation box also includes a scroll of fountain pen paper.

Just three hundred Izumo Yagumonuri pens are being produced. We have managed to secure a very small number of these for our customers. Once they are gone, there will be no more.
