The Nakaya 17mm Diameter Long Cigar Chinkin Dragonflies fountain pen is a striking portrayal of dragonflies and flowers set against a backdrop of rich Heki-tamenuri. While the standard size Long pen has a diameter of 15mm, this version adds an additional 2mm. This may seem like a small difference, yet the extra diameter is surprisingly significant in adding greater heft and dimension to this pen. Not only is this model the longest that Nakaya has to offer, but it is also the widest across, making it a perfect choice to showcase the intricate Maki-e artistry on this pen.

The Nakaya 17mm Diameter Long Cigar Chinkin Dragonflies fountain pen is handcrafted from ebonite and Urushi lacquer
and comes standard with your choice of solid gold 14k nib.

After the base color is applied, the Maki-e artist uses the Chinkin technique to carefully engrave the dots and lines of the dragonfly motif using a sharp instrument. Gold and colored powders are then used to fill in the lines, resulting in an elegant portrait of the insect in its habitat.

As always, this Nakaya pen body is made from hand-turned ebonite hard rubber which is then layered with Urushi lacquer in the Wajima region of Japan. Earthy brown-green Heki-tamenuri lacquer is used as the base color, and the vivid green under-color seen on the gripping section will become more apparent as the outer layers mature over time.

Dragonflies are well-known as a symbol of change and self-realization, as well as the maturity that comes with reflection. Here the dragonflies flutter amongst the flowers. The artist has chosen to ensure that even when the pen is uncapped, each dragnofly pictured remains intact.

Nakaya pens can be filled with bottled fountain pen ink using the provided converter. They can also use Platinum brand ink cartridges. Hand-painted Maki-e converters are also available, as are a wide range of other options and accessories.

Nakaya 14k nibs are well-suited to customizations including Stub, Cursive Italic, and Left Oblique, as well as the modification for added flexibility.
The floral motif continues even onto the slightly flared gripping section.

Decorative rice paper, a simple solid softwood shipping box decorated with Japanese Kanji script, a starter box of Platinum ink cartridges, and a fabric pen ""kimono"" are all included with this pen, making it a lovely presentation item. Sensible and elegant packaging has long been a hallmark of the Nakaya brand.

Nakaya pens are individually handcrafted in a process that requires a minimum of three to six months and often much longer.
Unless requested otherwise, each pen or nib you purchase from us will be carefully examined, tested, and optimized for your personal writing characteristics before it ships.
