Nakaya's Aka-Tamenuri color shows a bright red peeking through a more subdued red-brown on this desk pen.

Merging classic style with the modern, Nakaya Deskpens are one of the best examples yet of this company's ability to combine elegant form with exceptional functionality. These pens make a striking statement when placed in their matching holders.

The Nakaya Deskpen in Aka-tamenuri is handcrafted from ebonite hard rubber and finished in many layers of urushi lacquer.

If simplicity is the highest form of elegance, the Nakaya Deskpen in Aka-tamenuri fits the bill. As unadorned as this pen is, it achieves greatness by virtue of its materials, surface, and color. Two different shades of red are layered on top of one another to create a striking effect that will shift as the pen matures to expose more of the bright red underlayers.

The urushi tradition is historic and profound in Japan, where lacquer ware has adorned utilitarian objects for centuries. This technique, though painstaking, gives this fountain pen its deep lustrous sheen and subtle color shift. This Nakaya fountain pen is made of ebonite that is meticulously coated with urushi, a material made from the sap of a Japanese lacquer tree.

Even though this pen is quite long, its base is made out of lightweight ebonite. The long tapered barrel gives it perfect visual balance, and it is amazingly ergonomic in the hand.
This urushi application appears to glow from within. The darker red ""pulls back"" from the edges, leaving an impression of inner light. This is particularly clear on the end cap and the gripping section, where the more vivid red peeks out from the outer layer. Over time more of this inner red will be exposed, and the fountain pen's color will evolve subtly yet surely.
Nakaya pens can be filled with bottled fountain pen ink using the provided converter and can also use Platinum brand ink cartridges. Hand-painted Maki-e converters are also available.
14k nibs are well-suited to customizations including Stub, Cursive Italic, and Left Oblique, as well as the modification for added flex.
When the Nakaya Deskpen in Aka-tamenuri is in uncapped position, it can be displayed in a matching deskpen stand, which is sold separately. Together the pair creates an elegant set that looks striking on any desk at home or work.

Decorative rice paper, a simple solid softwood shipping box decorated with Japanese Kanji script, and a fabric pen ""kimono"" are all included with this pen, making it a lovely presentation item. Sensible and elegant packaging has long been a hallmark of the Nakaya brand.

Nakaya pens are individually handcrafted in a process that requires a minimum of three to six months and often much longer.

Unless requested otherwise, each pen or nib you purchase from us will be carefully examined, tested, and optimized for your personal writing characteristics before it ships.
