The Nakaya Dorsal Fin Version 1 is one of the most innovative and distinctive designs created by Nakaya. Layers of Urushi lacquer are applied over a period of months to create the fin on the cap, and the surface is then completed with smooth Urushi finish. This is one of the most memorable writing instruments Nakaya has produced.

Nakaya's Dorsal Fin pens in Ishime-Kanshitsu stone finish have proven to be extremely popular with pen lovers - the fin shape on the cap is both aesthetically striking and also serves as a built-in roll-stopper. Now Nakaya has introduced a version of this style in smooth Heki-tamenuri finish.

This finish highlights the sleek minimalism of this pen - form and function are united in an exemplary manner. The Heki-tamenuri color is a beautiful earthy brown with surprising bursts of green where the color shifts subtly, like welcome patches of grass peeking out from the soil after the rain.

Multiple layers of urushi lacquer are applied over a period of months to create the raised fin - this is one of the most time-intensive proceedures utilized by Nakaya.

Beyond its distinctive appearance, the Dorsal Fin is also a terrific everyday writer; the balance is superb. Nakaya pens can be filled with bottled ink using the provided converter, and can also use Platinum brand cartridges. Hand-painted Maki-e converters are also available.

Green highlights show through at the barrel and cap edges and along the top of the fin. These gradual color changes will become noticeable over time as the layers of urushi lacquer mature.

The Nakaya Dorsal Fin version 1 in smooth Heki-tamenuri finish can be provided with any of Nakaya's solid gold 14k nibs in your choice of tipping size.
The Nakaya double slit Music nib is available at an added premium, as are plated nibs in Pink Gold, Rhodium, Ruthenium, or Two-Tone.
These smooth-writing nibs are well-suited to customizations including Stub, Cursive Italic, and Left Oblique, as well as the modification for added flex.
Decorative rice paper, a simple solid softwood shipping box decorated with Japanese Kanji script, and a fabric pen ""kimono"" are all included with this pen, making it a lovely presentation item. Sensible and elegant packaging has long been a hallmark of the Nakaya brand.
Nakaya pens are individually handcrafted in a process that requires a minimum of three to six months and often much longer.
Unless requested otherwise, each pen or nib you purchase from us will be carefully examined, tested, and optimized for your personal writing characteristics before it ships.
