The Nakaya Dorsal Fin Version 2 in Heki-tamenuri is hand-finished in natural urushi lacquer over an ebonite body - the fins on the cap and barrel are created by applying multiple layers of urushi lacquer over a period of months. Each pen is equipped with your choice of 14k solid gold nib.

Our complimentary nib tuning adjusts pressure and ink flow to your personal preferences, and our optional nib customizations can add to the character and distinctiveness of your writing on the page. We are an authorized Nakaya dealer.

The warm hues of Heki-tamenuri finish seem a particularly appropriate complement to the undulating lines of the Dorsal Fin Version 2 - with more than a passing resemblance to cut bamboo, this is a pen that almost appears to be alive.

Appropriately enough, this pen begins life with natural ebonite sustainably harvested from the wild rubber gum tree. Urushi lacquer, itself refined from a natural sap, is then applied over a period of months to create the fins on the cap and barrel. This pen is an artisanal product from start to finish.

Note the detail in the Urushi lacquer finish above and below. Each pen is hand-finished, and no two pens will ever be exactly alike.
Nakaya pens can be filled with bottled fountain pen ink using the provided converter and can also use Platinum brand ink cartridges. Hand-painted Maki-e converters are also available.

The Nakaya Dorsal Fin Version 2 in smooth Heki-tamenuri finish is provided with solid gold 14k single-tone nib in your choice of tipping size.
The double slit Music nib is available at an added premium, as are plated nibs in Pink Gold, Rhodium, Ruthenium, or Two-Tone.
14k nibs are well-suited to customizations including Stub, Cursive Italic, and Left Oblique, as well as the modification for added flex.
Decorative rice paper, a simple solid softwood shipping box decorated with Japanese Kanji script, and a fabric pen "kimono" are all included with this pen, making it a lovely presentation item. Sensible and elegant packaging has long been a hallmark of the Nakaya brand.

Nakaya pens are individually handcrafted in a process that requires a minimum of three to six months and often much longer.
