At first glance this pen my appear to be another Long Cigar in Aka-tamenuri but after close examination the image of a golden dragon can be seen through the deep layers of Urushi. With its intricate detail and long size, the Nakaya Long Cigar Aka-tamenuri Ascending Dragon fountain pen is a striking writing instrument with presence.

The Nakaya Long Cigar Aka-tamenuri Ascending Dragon fountain pen is handcrafted from ebonite and Urushi lacquer. It comes with solid gold 14k single-tone nib in your choice of tipping size. The double slit Music nib is available at an added premium, as are plated nibs in Pink Gold, Rhodium, Ruthenium, or Two-Tone.

In Tame-Sukashi technique, layers of clear, smooth Urushi lacquer are applied over a painted motif - it is similar to Tame-Nuri technique, in which lacquer is applied over a solid color. The underlying motif in Tame-Sukashi will become more promiment over time as the Urushi lacquer ages and becomes more transparent.

This pen is made using the Tame-Sukashi technique, which obscures an under-painting with a urushi lacquer. In time the under-image emerges stronger, and the dragon painting will be much more prominent.

The fascinating feature of this pen is that the image literally ""ascends"" with use as the image of the dragon comes up as the pen is handled. In this slow process the owner's hand and everyday wear will give this pen the beauty of age. With its impressive length, the Long Cigar Aka-tamenuri Ascending Dragon provides an excellent showcase for the elaborate dragon to ascend, and without a clip the design is left to grace the surface uninterrupted.

If you prefer the earthy brownish-green tones of Heki-tamenuri, the Nakaya Long Cigar Ascending Dragon is also available in that finish.

Nakaya pens can be filled with bottled fountain pen ink using the provided converter, and can also use Platinum brand ink cartridges. Hand-painted Maki-e converters are also available.

Decorative rice paper, a simple solid softwood shipping box decorated with Japanese Kanji script, and a fabric pen ""kimono"" are all included with this pen, making it a lovely presentation item. Sensible and elegant packaging has long been a hallmark of the Nakaya brand.

Nakaya pens are individually handcrafted in a process that requires a minimum of three to six months and often much longer.
