In Tame-Sukashi technique, layers of clear, smooth Urushi lacquer are applied over a painted motif, giving a mysterious blue-green hue - it is similar to Tame-Nuri technique, in which lacquer is applied over a solid color. The underlying motif in Tame-Sukashi will become more promiment over time as the Urushi lacquer ages and becomes more transparent.

Nakaya's Naka-ai Cigar Tame-Sukashi ""Seiryu"" Blue Dragon fountain pen uses a unique Urushi lacquer color mix to depict an ascending dragon. The cone-shaped ends and tapered body of the Naka-ai model provide a perfect backdrop for the winding dragon motif, as it appears to rise to the top of the pen in pursuit of the flaming pearl. The nature of the Tame-Sukashi technique is such that the longer the pen is used, the more the motif ""ascends"", becoming more and more evident.

''Seiryu'' is one of four gods and protects the east direction. ""Seiryu"" means the ''Blue Dragon'' in Chinese. The dragon is in constant pursuit of the flaming pearl that is depicted on the gripping section.
