Associated with deep woods and cool soft light, the fern has a repeating pattern that moves gracefully around this pen. The origin of the name “Shinobu” (fern) comes from its ability to endure both moist and dry climates. The intricacy of this hand engraved pattern accentuates the smooth lines of this pen.

Many stages go into making the special surface of this pen. First layers of urushi lacquer are applied over the natural hard rubber. Then the pattern is hand engraved into these layers followed by an application of blue pigment, first applied then removed leaving traces in the carved crevices.

Notice the long tapered tail of the barrel. This subtle, supple shape is hand crafted from solid hard rubber and fits perfectly at the back of the hand.

The Nakaya nib is imprinted ""Nakata,"" the family name of the manufacturer, and is made of solid 14K gold. Each of these nibs is suitable for our customization to extra flexible. The larger tips can be customized by us into cursive italic, stub, or oblique points.
Note that Nakaya nibs run finer than Western nibs of the same named size.
Heavy decorative rice paper, a simple solid softwood shipping box decorated with Japanese Kanji script, and a fabric pen pouch are all included with this pen, making it a lovely presentation item. Sensible and elegant packaging has long been a hallmark of the Nakaya brand.
