Nakaya Piccolo Cigar fountain pens are available in a range of colors. Hand turned from solid hard rubber rod stock, they are then lacquered with multiple layers of natural resins. The intricate maki-e is created by a skilled artisan during a time-intensive process.

The Nakaya Piccolo Cigar The Sky in Polynesia fountain pen is handcrafted from ebonite and Urushi lacquer, and comes standard with solid gold 14k single-tone nib in your choice of tipping size.

The double slit Music nib is available at an added premium, as are plated nibs in Pink Gold, Rhodium, Ruthenium, or Two-Tone.

The Nakaya Piccolo Cigar The Sky in Polynesia fountain pen was inspired by the artist Henri Matisse's gouache paper cut-out pieces that he did during his later career. Matisse's ""Polynesia, The Sky"", completed in 1946, served as the direct influence for this pen design.
The better part of a year was needed to complete the design, color palette decisions, and painting of this lyrically fanciful pen. At the age of 77 Matisse had turned to ""cut-outs"" which were physically easier for him to complete. These sorts of motifs showed up throughout much of his later life - simple shapes representing flying shapes suggesting the air that lifts them.

The Nakaya Piccolo Cigar can be filled with bottled fountain pen ink using the provided converter. Nakaya pens can also use Platinum brand ink cartridges. Hand-painted Maki-e converters are also available.

The end of this pen is boldly painted with gold urushi lacquer. The entire effect is one of exuberance and joy, which marked much of Matisse's long career.

This is a more compact fountain pen than the Naka-ai or Neo Standard, yet will fit comfortably in most hands.
Nakaya 14k nibs are well-suited to customizations including Stub, Cursive Italic, and Left Oblique, as well as the modification for added flex.

Decorative rice paper, a simple solid softwood shipping box decorated with Japanese Kanji script, and a fabric pen ""kimono"" are all included with this pen, making it a lovely presentation item. Sensible and elegant packaging has long been a hallmark of the Nakaya brand.
Nakaya pens are individually handcrafted in a process that requires a minimum of three to six months and often much longer.

Unless requested otherwise, each pen or nib you purchase from us will be carefully examined, tested, and optimized for your personal writing characteristics before it ships.
