Nakaya Piccolo Cigar fountain pens are available in a range of colors. Hand turned from solid hard rubber rod stock, they are then lacquered with multiple layers of natural resins. Here string is wrapped around the fountain pen and provides a textural contrast to the smooth urushi lacquer.

The Nakaya Piccolo Cigar String-Rolled Aka-tamenuri fountain pen is handcrafted from ebonite and Urushi lacquer, and comes standard with solid gold 14k nib in your choice of tipping size.

The double slit Music nib is available at an added premium, as are plated nibs in Pink Gold, Rhodium, Ruthenium, or Two-Tone.

Nakaya's Piccolo Cigar in String-Rolled Aka-tamenuri utilizes the compact shape of the Piccolo model to show off the rich, reddish-red finish. The same shade of thread wrapped around the cap and barrel provides an interesting textural element amidst the smooth Urushi lacquer.

Not only does the wrapping process add an aesthetic look to this fountain pen, but it also serves a functional purpose by strengthening the area around the cap and barrel edges. String wrapping has a long history as a decorative art in Japan - tsukamaki, for instance, is the art of sword handle wrapping.

As with all tamenuri pens, the color of the Piccolo Cigar String-Rolled Aka-tamenuri fountain pen will shift with time and use, eventually giving way to lighter red hues. Because this is a handmade writing instrument, colors will vary slightly from pen to pen - no two will ever be exactly alike. Not only is it aesthetically striking, but this is also a practical pen that will fit comfortably in most hands.

Nakaya pens can be filled with bottled inkusing the provided converter, and can also use Platinum brand cartridges. Hand-painted Maki-e converters are also available.
14k nibs are well-suited to customizations including Stub, Cursive Italic, and Left Oblique, as well as the modification for added flex.
Nakaya pens ship in a solid softwood shipping box decorated with Japanese Kanji script and lined with decorative rice paper. A fabric pen kimono and starter box of Platinum brand cartridges are also included, making this pen a lovely presentation item. Sensible and elegant packaging has long been a hallmark of the Nakaya brand.

Nakaya pens are individually handcrafted in a process that requires a minimum of three to six months and often much longer.
Unless requested otherwise, each pen or nib you purchase from us will be carefully examined, tested, and optimized for your personal writing characteristics before it ships.
