The lustrous matte surface of the Nakaya Piccolo Writer Shu Unpolished String Rolled fountain pen highlights the natural hues of this pen. Rich terra cotta tones of unpolished Shu find an earthy complement in the understated finish, and the dark red silk thread wrapped around the cap and barrel adds a very human feel.

The Nakaya Piccolo Writer Shu Unpolished String Rolled fountain pen is handcrafted from ebonite and Urushi lacquer.

The wrapping process both strengthens the area around the cap and barrel edges, as well as providing a distinctive and unusual decorative element to this writing instrument. String wrapping has a long history as a decorative art in Japan - tsukamaki, for instance, is the art of sword handle wrapping.

This Nakaya fountain pen is made of hand-turned ebonite hard rubber that is meticulously coated with Urushi, a material made from the sap of a Japanese lacquer tree. The process of collecting the Urushi and applying many layers of lacquer to this fountain pen takes three months or more to complete. Fine silk string is embedded in the urushi lacquer, then given coats of this red natural resin.
Nakaya pens can be filled with bottled ink using the provided converter, and can also use Platinum brand high quality cartridges. Hand-painted Maki-e converters are also available.

The family name, Nakata, shows proudly on each Nakaya nib.
Decorative rice paper, a simple solid softwood shipping box decorated with Japanese Kanji script, and a fabric pen ""kimono"" are all included with this pen, making it a lovely presentation item. Sensible and elegant packaging has long been a hallmark of the Nakaya brand.

Nakaya pens are individually handcrafted in a process that requires a minimum of three to six months and often much longer.
