The wind blowing through a bamboo grove inspires the motif on this beautiful pen. Maki-e, literally ""sprinkled powder,"" is a general term for the process by which figurative or abstract designs are created by sprinkling pigment or metallic powder onto the surface of Urushi lacquer while it is still wet. There are many varieties of Maki-e, and this version with the Ashi design is an intricate example of the time-intensive artistry.

This striking and understated pen utilizes the the time-intensive and elaborate Kaki-Wari Maki-e technique to achieve its subtle and engaging effects. This technique is particularly suitable for realizing the expressive detailing seen on the surface of this pen.

Gold urushi powder is used in the reed design, which defines details down to the level of individual fronds and leaflets.

Note the subtle detail used to create black reeds set against a black background. This pen is a quiet masterwork and an extraordinary example of breathtakingly understated surface design.

We are particularly attracted to the designs on this pen. It winds around the barrel and cap in such a way that one wants to hold and turn it in your fingers. The reeds are made with razor crisp detail including the center shaft of each leaf.

The Nakaya nib, imprinted Nakata, the family name of the manufacturer, is made of solid 14K gold.
Each of these nibs is suitable for our customization to extra flexible. The medium and broad tips can be customized by us into cursive italic, stub, or oblique points.

The heavy decorative rice paper, simple solid softwood shipping box, and fabric pen pouch make a lovely presentation for these Nakaya Urushi pens. Sensible and elegant packaging has long been a hallmark of the Nakaya brand.
