Maki-e, literally ""sprinkled powder,"" is a general term for the process by which figurative or abstract designs are created by sprinkling pigment or metallic powder onto the surface of Urushi lacquer while it is still wet. There are many varieties of Maki-e, including particular variations such as Tame-sukashi, Raden, and Chinkin.

The Nakaya Portable Cigar Cherry Blossoms by Silver Powder fountain pen is handcrafted from ebonite and Urushi lacquer, and comes standard with solid gold 14k single-tone nib in your choice of tipping size.

The double slit Music nib is available at an added premium, as are plated nibs in Pink Gold, Rhodium, Ruthenium, or Two-Tone.

The cherry blossom is a well-known motif in Japanese culture, symbolizing the beauty and precious fragility of life. Nakaya's Portable Cigar Cherry Blossoms by Silver Powder fountain pen depicts this traditional symbol with a sleek, modern twist.

Made from ebonite covered with black Urushi lacquer, the backdrop for the Cherry Blossoms by Silver Powder fountain pen provides a striking contrast to the silver powder used for the design. Although difficult to see in images, the silver powder creates slight texture against the smooth Urushi. The rounded Portable Cigar model showcases the Maki-e work seamlessly.
The cherry blossom blooms only for a short time each year, yet is striking each time it happens. Pale pink flowers crest the branches for miles, and here Nakaya has depicted the blossom in silver powder for a stunning effect.

Nakaya pens can be filled with bottled ink using the provided converter and can also use Platinum brand cartridges. Hand-painted Maki-e converters are also available.
Nakaya 14k nibs are well-suited to customizations including Stub, Cursive Italic, or Left Oblique, as well as the modification for added flex.

Nakaya pens ship in a solid softwood shipping box decorated with Japanese Kanji script and lined with decorative rice paper. A fabric pen ""kimono"" and starter box of Platinum brand cartridges are also included, making this pen a lovely presentation item. Sensible and elegant packaging has long been a hallmark of the Nakaya brand.

Nakaya pens are individually handcrafted in a process that requires a minimum of three to six months and often much longer.

Unless requested otherwise, each pen or nib you purchase from us will be carefully examined, tested, and optimized for your personal writing characteristics before it ships.
