This is the smooth and slender Nakaya Portable. These pens are hand turned from solid rod stock, then lacquered with multiple layers contrasting colored natural resins. With its striking floral pattern and smooth, slender shape, the Nakaya Portable cigar Housoge Kikyo-tamenuri and Gold fountain pen represents the finest in Maki-e artistry and skill.

The Nakaya Portable Cigar Housoge Kikyo-tamenuri and Gold fountain pen is handcrafted from ebonite and Urushi lacquer, and comes standard with solid gold 14k single-tone nib in your choice of tipping size.

The double slit Music nib is available at an added premium, as are plated nibs in Pink Gold, Rhodium, Ruthenium, or Two-Tone.

Layers of deep blue Kikyo-tamenuri Urushi are hand-painted over an ebonite base, and each gold-filled line on this pen is hand-engraved.
This is the perfect fountain pen for those looking for a unique full-sized writing instrument. The lack of a clip allows the striking pattern to saturate the pen from tip to tail.

The Housoge floral pattern has its origins in the Tenpyo period, 729-749 CE, during which time Buddhism was becoming an officially recognized state religion in Japan. The Housoge represents an idealized hybrid ""flower in paradise"" as envisioned by the Pure Land Buddhism of the period.

Kikyo-tamenuri Urushi covers the cap and barrel of this fountain pen. Though it appears almost black at first glance, with time the outer dark layer will grow more transparent, allowing the blue under-layer to show through more brightly. As with all hand-painted Tame-nuri pens, the colors will vary slightly from pen to pen - no two will ever be exactly the same. After the lacquer is applied, a Maki-e artist carves the Housoge motif using a sharp instrument with the time-intensive Chinkin technique. Gold powder is then sprinkled on to fill the fine, narrow lines of the design.
Nakaya pens can be filled with bottled fountain pen ink using the provided converter and can also use Platinum brand ink cartridges. Hand-painted Maki-e converters are also available.
These 14k nibs are well-suited to customizations including Stub, Cursive Italic, and Left Oblique, as well as the modification for added flex.

Nakaya pens ship in a solid softwood shipping box decorated with Japanese Kanji script and lined with decorative rice paper. A fabric pen ""kimono"" and starter box of Platinum brand cartridges are also included, making this pen a lovely presentation item. Sensible and elegant packaging has long been a hallmark of the Nakaya brand.

Nakaya pens are individually handcrafted in a process that requires a minimum of three to six months and often much longer.

Unless requested otherwise, each pen or nib you purchase from us will be carefully examined, tested, and optimized for your personal writing characteristics before it ships.
