This is the smooth and slender Nakaya Portable. These pens are hand turned from solid rod stock, then lacquered with multiple layers of natural resins. With color and texture reminiscent of avocados, the Nakaya Portable Cigar Ishime-Kanshitsu Heki-tamenuri fountain pen is a pleasure to hold and touch.

The Nakaya Portable Cigar Ishi-me Kanshitsu Heki-tamenuri fountain pen is handcrafted from ebonite and Urushi lacquer, and comes standard with solid gold 14k single-tone nib in your choice of tipping size.
The double slit Music nib is available at an added premium, as are plated nibs in Pink Gold, Rhodium, Ruthenium, or Two-Tone.

The stone-finished surface has just the right combination of smooth and textured finish to feel great between the fingers.

Because this stone-finish texture is carried through to the gripping section where it is really felt, the design of this pen utilizes its tactile properties to the greatest possible extent. This model, the ""Cigar"", without clip, reveals the form of the pen without encumbrance. We suggest a Pen Pillow with all ""Cigar"" models to keep them exactly where you want them on your desk.

As with all hand-painted Tame-nuri pens, the colors will vary slightly from pen to pen - no two will ever be exactly the same. With time, the outer dark layer will grow more transparent, allowing the Heki under-layer to show through. There is contrast in color between the amoeba-like high spots and the deeper lacquer color between the ridges. This is a mid-size pen that fits comfortably in most hands.
The Portable Cigar in Ishi-me Kanshitsu Heki-tamenuri can be filled with bottled fountain pen ink using the provided converter. Nakaya pens can also use Platinum brand ink cartridges. Hand-painted Maki-e converters are also available.

14k nibs are well-suited to customizations including Stub, Cursive Italic, and Left Oblique, as well as the modification for added flex - see our nib customizations page for more information.
Nakaya pens ship in a solid softwood shipping box decorated with Japanese Kanji script and lined with decorative rice paper. A fabric pen ""kimono"" and starter box of Platinum brand cartridges are also included, making this pen a lovely presentation item. Sensible and elegant packaging has long been a hallmark of the Nakaya brand.
Nakaya pens are individually handcrafted in a process that requires a minimum of three to six months and often much longer. Unless requested otherwise, each pen or nib you purchase from us will be carefully examined, tested, and optimized for your personal writing characteristics before it ships.
