Dressed in brownish-green tamenuri and a smooth, continuous shape, the Portable Writer in Heki-tamenuri is one of the classic Nakaya pen designs. The curving expanse of the Portable size showcases the layered Heki-tamenuri finish, which is further accented by the gold-plated clip.

This Nakaya fountain pen is made of naturally harvested ebonite hard rubber which has been hand-turned and then is meticulously coated with urushi, a material made from the sap of a Japanese lacquer tree. The process of collecting the urushi and applying many layers of lacquer to this fountain pen requires time, traditional skills, and patience.

As with all hand-painted Tame-nuri pens, the colors will vary slightly from pen to pen - no two will ever be exactly the same. With time, the outer dark layer will grow more transparent, allowing the Heki under-layer to show through. The word tame in Japanese means little pool of water and nuri means painting. So the pen's heki green surface is seen through the transparent layer, a ""little pool of water"".
The Portable Writer in Heki-tamenuri can be filled with bottled fountain pen ink using the provided converter. Nakaya pens can also use Platinum brand top quality ink cartridges. Hand-painted Maki-e converters are also available.
A gold pocket clip brings out this writing instrument's warmth color and also serves as a built-in roll stopper.

Nakaya pens ship in a solid softwood shipping box decorated with Japanese Kanji script and lined with decorative rice paper. A fabric pen ""kimono"" and starter box of Platinum brand cartridges are also included, making this pen a lovely presentation item. Nakaya pens are individually handcrafted in a process that requires a minimum of three to six months and often much longer.
