With rich terra cotta tones and an intriguing string-rolled element, the Nakaya Portable Writer Shu Polished fountain pen is a study in the beauty of natural elements. Wrapping or binding has long been a technique for strengthening. We have seen wrapping on bamboo fry rods used to join eyes to the pole, and the first time we saw it on a fountain pen was as a clever repair to a split cap. The use of wrapping as a decorative element employing organic materials is consistent with Nakaya Pen Company's philosophy of simple elegance.

Silk thread is used in the binding of the Nakaya Portable Writer Shu Polished String Rolled fountain pen.

This Nakaya pen achieves greatness by virtue of its streamlined design, excellent materials, flawless surface and saturated colors.

This Nakaya fountain pen is made of hard rubber or ebonite that is meticulously coated with Urushi, a material made from the sap of a Japanese lacquer tree. The process of collecting the Urushi and applying many layers of lacquer to this fountain pen takes three months to complete. Fine string is embedded in the urushi lacquer, then given coats of this red natural resin. Not only is this string visually appealing, but it lends a textural delight as well.

The Urushi process required as much as several months to complete. These finishes reveal a level of craftsmanship and attention that we have only seen in the finest quality surfaces.

The Portable Writer Shu Polished String Rolled is a full-sized pen that will fit comfortably in most hands. Its smooth, slender shape creates excellent balance, and the gold pocket clip functions as a built-in roll stopper.
Nakaya pens can be filled with bottled ink using the provided converter, and can also use Platinum brand top quality cartridges. Hand-painted Maki-e converters are also available.

The family name ""Nakata"" is proudly imprinted on every Nakaya nib.
Decorative rice paper, a simple solid softwood shipping box decorated with Japanese Kanji script, and a fabric pen ""kimono"" are all included with this pen, making it a lovely presentation item. Sensible and elegant packaging has long been a hallmark of the Nakaya brand.

Nakaya pens are individually handcrafted in a process that requires a minimum of three to six months and often much longer.

Unless requested otherwise, each pen or nib you purchase from us will be carefully examined, tested, and optimized for your personal writing characteristics before it ships.
